How much does it cost to train my apprentice?
The Victorian Training Guarantee is an entitlement to a government subsidised place in recognised vocational training. It can be accessed at any time and will continue to be available for training at successively higher levels.
Under the Victorian Training Guarantee, every Victorian who is a citizen, permanent resident of Australia or other specific visa category holder is guaranteed a government- subsidised training place in an accredited course.
Employees can access a government subsidised training place if they are:
- under 20 years of age
- doing a Foundation-level course (preparation for work, literacy and numeracy courses)
- doing an accredited course that is higher than any they have completed in the past wishing to undertake an apprenticeship (regardless of previous higher qualifications).
All this means that tuition fee are paid by the Victorian Government under Skills Victoria funding programm.
Some courses offered by Melbourne Institute of Nails & Beauty are suitable for apprenticeship or traineeship. Generally apprenticeship is reserved to hairdressing courses, while government's rules classified beauty courses under a traineeship. The main difference is that a tool allowance or contribution is paid by the Government directly to the apprentice but is not available for a trainee.
Are there any fees and charges for training?
Melbourne Institute of Nails & Beauty receiving government funding is required to charge administration fee while all the tuition fee are funded by Victoria Government. A charge is also made for materials and books, student services and amenities.
If the trainee is not entitled to a placement in a funded course (see the criteria above), tuition fees are generally paid by the apprentice or trainee. Some industrial awards, however, require that these fees and charges are paid by the employer. In many instances, employers who are not obliged to pay fees and charges for their apprentices or trainees do so voluntarily, or at least assist their apprentice or trainee to bear the costs. Your apprentice or trainee will need to have all the details of fees and charges and who pays them, before they enroll.
If your apprentice or trainee is having difficulty paying their fees, there are some options open to them:
- There may be concessions for apprentices or trainees holding a Health Care (including Low Income) Card
- The institute hardship policy might apply.
